YOU KNOW BIRTH, BUT WHAT ABOUT EVERYTHING PARENTS CARRY AROUND IT?

Why do parents need a Perinatal Mental Health Coach?

Trauma’s rising. Mental health problems are rising. And you want to help.

If you’re drawn to this work you already know how much a parent goes through, not just physically but emotionally too.

Maybe you support parents through pregnancy and birth already. Maybe it was your own experience that opened your eyes. Either way, you keep noticing the same thing: the people in front of you are anxious, isolated, grieving a birth that didn’t go the way they wanted, struggling to bond, or falling apart in the fourth trimester behind a brave face.

Around 1 in 5 mums experience a perinatal mental health problem. Around 1 in 3 women find some part of their birth traumatic. Up to 30,000 a year come out of birth with PTSD. And those are only the ones who get counted.

Partners are struggling too – usually in silence. And the services meant to catch any of them are stretched to breaking point.

So you do what you can. Then you reach the edge of what you’re trained for, you signpost on, and you hope someone picks them up.

Information and signposting aren't enough

Knowing the signs of perinatal anxiety or depression matters. Knowing where to refer matters. Nobody’s arguing with that.

But the support you refer parents to is often months away, oversubscribed, or simply not the type of help they need for the moment they’re actually in.

What helps them in the meantime – and what often makes the biggest difference of the lot – is having someone who can sit with them. Hold space without judgement. Coach them through what they’re carrying. And give them practical, therapeutic ways to regulate, process, and feel human again.

That’s what this course was built to do.

BECOMING A TRUSTED GUIDE

Is this a therapy qualification?

No – and we’re crystal clear about that. This is not a clinical qualification. It does not train you to deliver therapy, and it does not make you a therapist.

What it does do is train you to be a confident, capable Perinatal Mental Health Coach. Someone who can hold space, help parents explore their emotional and mental wellbeing, run support groups, coach parents 1:1, connect them to the community support around them, and offer a real toolkit of therapeutic activities.

The whole thing is therapeutic in nature. You won’t just sit and learn the theory of perinatal mental health. You’ll learn to actually use it.

And knowing exactly where your scope starts and where it stops is not a limitation. It is actually the thing that makes you safe, trusted and credible. The best practitioners are the ones who know their lane and work brilliantly inside it.

What will you be able to do as a Perinatal Mental Health Coach?

Many students are surprised by how much these therapeutic tools change the way they show up for parents - and for themselves. Every concept is broken down and applied step by step, so you can use it for real. We even hand you a full set of session and care plans to get you going!

YOUR SERVICES, YOUR WAY

What could your practice look like?

It’s easy to hear “perinatal mental health coach” and imagine one thing – sitting one-to-one with a struggling mum. Which is part of it, and it matters. But it’s not the whole picture.

Instead you could be running:

Antenatal wellbeing groups, building parents’ resilience before baby arrives. Social support is one of the strongest known protective factors against postnatal depression, and this is you putting it in place early.

Postnatal support groups, for parents going through it – or catching the ones under stress before it turns into something deeper.

Six week therapeutic group blocks, taking a small group through the tools: breathwork, journaling, art, nature based regulation.

1:1 private coaching, for the parent who needs you to themselves.

And because you’ll understand social prescribing, you can take referrals from the services around you – or send parents onwards to the community support they need alongside you.

THE NHS CALLS IT PERSONALISED CARE

What is social prescribing, and why is it in this course?

Social prescribing is connecting someone to non-clinical support for their health and wellbeing – groups, creative activity, nature, community – instead of (or alongside) medication and therapy. The NHS has link workers doing exactly this, because for a lot of people, the thing that actually helps isn’t another prescription. It’s connection.

Now put that into the perinatal world. An isolated new mum on a six month waiting list doesn’t just need a referral. She needs her village: a walking group, a creative session, a room full of parents who get it.

That’s why social prescribing runs right through this course. ATI is an RSPH-approved centre for both health coaching and social prescribing – you study the full content of both, with your certificate assessed through the health coaching units. So the support you offer reaches beyond your own sessions and into a parent’s actual life.

Meet Mia, your mentor

Mia Scotland is a registered, accredited and chartered Clinical Psychologist with over 25 years’ experience. She’s spent her career on the psychology of birth and how good preparation leads to a better birth. She specialises in antenatal and postnatal mental health, and her work reaches into areas like the Rewind technique and resilience training too. She teaches and speaks all over the world, so you may well bump into her at a maternity conference.

Mia is also the bestselling author of Why Perinatal Depression Matters.

That’s who’s standing behind this training. Not a course writer who read the research. A chartered clinical psychologist who’s spent 25 years in it.

Plus Lizzie and Pamela

Lizzie is ATI’s founder. She started out training as a midwife, and that’s where she found the two things she couldn’t put down: antenatal education and perinatal mental health. So she built a career around them, then built ATI and BirthWorld around that. She’s the reason this course exists, and the reason it’s built the way it is.

Then there’s Pamela, who handles the part most training leaves you to figure out on your own: getting your work in front of the parents who need it. She’s been a marketing expert for over 20 years and runs her own agency, Worsley Creative. Once you’ve qualified, she’s the one keeping you right on the visibility, the branding and all the bits that make a practice actually fill.

“This company was recommended to me, and because of the money-back guarantee, I decided to give it a go. Loving it! Especially the live tutorials and the variety of learning materials. I feel mentally stretched and energised. Found my village! Thank you Lizzie.””

Antenatal Educator Diploma

Pay in Full Bonuses

Nobody really warns you about this part: getting qualified is one thing, but turning it into something parents can actually find and book is another, and it’s where most people stall. These two bonuses are built for exactly that bit. Pay in full and they’re yours, on top of the discount.

A 1:1 with Lizzie to build your offer for real

Most training hands you a certificate and waves you off. This sits you down with our founder Lizzie, one to one, to design your first perinatal mental health support offering and map the journey a parent takes through your services. You leave knowing what you’re offering, who it’s for, and how the pieces fit. And because she’s looking a few steps ahead with you, it grows into a proper practice instead of a pile of disconnected bits you try to bolt together later.

Done with you marketing, not another course about it

Marketing is the part most people dread, so we don’t make you do it on your own. While you train, we build the foundations with you: your first funnel, a blog outline, a freebie to gift your parents, and the emails and social posts that take someone from finding you to booking you. Parents tend to book around three months ahead, so done well, you can be taking bookings before you’ve even finished the course.

Both bonuses come back to the same thing: you finishing this ready to work, not qualified and then stuck.

Your questions answered...

You train for it – there’s no degree required and no clinical background needed. This course takes you through 165 hours of self-paced learning covering perinatal mental health, therapeutic tools, health coaching, behaviour change and social prescribing, leading to a Royal Society for Public Health Level 3 qualification. You can enrol today and start straight away.

None! Your qualification doesn’t “run out”, it doesn’t need renewing, and you are not tied to any licensing or membership. After the Antenatal Training International program, you are an independent practitioner.

Wherever suits you and the parents you’re supporting. A community hall or a children’s centre. Online, if that fits your life and theirs better. Your own front room, if you’d rather keep it small and warm while you find your feet.

And if you already work with parents, you can fold this straight into what you do now, as a deeper way to support the ones who need more than you can currently offer. The training travels with you. Where you take it is your call.

No – this trains you to support parents’ emotional and mental wellbeing, hold space, run groups, coach, and use real therapeutic tools, all inside a clear scope. It doesn’t make you a therapist or a clinician, and we’d never pretend it does. Knowing where your scope stops is part of what makes you safe and trusted.

Loads, and it doesn’t stop once you qualify. Lifetime access to the course and every update, regular live tutorials (all recorded, because 7pm UK is 3am for some of our students!), the in person Skills and Wellbeing Days, and free ongoing CPD through the Perinatal Hive Mind with the ATI team and guest experts. You won’t be cut loose the day your certificate lands.

Fair question – supporting a real parent is a world away from watching a video! You practise through the live weekly tutorials, the case studies and the scenarios, and then for real at the in person workshops, with support right there while you find your feet.

A few things. First, this leads to a real, recognised Royal Society for Public Health Level 3 qualification, not a weekend certificate you bought off a Facebook ad.

Second, the people behind it actually know their stuff. Mia, who mentors on this course, is a chartered clinical psychologist. And she’s not the exception. Every ATI tutor is the top of their field with a decade or more of doing it for real.

And we don’t hand you a certificate and vanish. You get lifetime access, ongoing live support, free CPD, and proper help building the thing once you’ve qualified. Most training stops at the knowledge, but we stay for the part where you actually put it to use.

Plenty do. We won’t put a number in your mouth or promise you an income, because that depends on you, your area and how you build it. What we will do is hand you the training, the tools and the business support to do it properly, and then help you actually do it.

And if you don’t have the time to market your services, or simply don’t want to, you also have the choice to work through our UK wide agency BirthWorld CIC. Gain clients on autopilot and just turn up and support!

The Royal Society for Public Health is one of the UK’s oldest public health bodies, and an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual. ATI is a registered RSPH centre (number 9811), approved for both health coaching and social prescribing.

Your Level 3 qualification is assessed through the health coaching units of the course, and it sits on your CV as a recognised national qualification, not just a course certificate.

Not at all – there are no entry requirements, and plenty of students arrive with lived experience rather than a professional background.

That said, this course goes deep, so if you already work with parents as a doula, educator, peer supporter or midwife, you’ll find it builds directly on what you do now.

Depending on your circumstances – yes.

Because BirthWorld is a CIC we have the ability to apply for grants and funding for our students to cover their training and business support.

4 Steps to your Perinatal Mental Health Career

Step 1 - Learn

Work through the online modules and tutorials at your own pace, in your own time. It's broken into small chunks, so you can fit it around real life.
Video, animations, workbooks, puzzles, audio and blogs, because not everyone learns the same way. Certainly no death by PowerPoint!

Step 2 - Apply

Live weekly tutorials with the module leaders help you take what you've learned and use it on real situations. Scenarios, case studies, ethical discussions, plus the practical side of setting up and running your own support work.
Can't make it live? Watch the replay.

Step 3 - Practice

Our in-person Skills and Wellbeing Days are where you practise your skills, try the therapeutic tools for yourself, build your confidence and meet your community. A photographer and videographer come along too, so you leave with content for your own brand presence.
These aren't compulsory and you don't need to attend to qualify. Usually spring or autumn, within the Midlands.

Step 4 - Elevate

Lifetime access to the course, all the updates, and the live tutorials, so you can come back and refresh whenever you want.
Alongside it, free membership of the Perinatal Hive Mind, with CPD masterclasses that keep you current, both in your field and in the ever-shifting world of marketing.

GO ONE STEP FURTHER...

Advanced Diploma in the 1001 Days
